Eagle pendant/locket

Hi folks,
I'm just squeezing in this small project for a friend in between building the orrery that I'm currently working on (see my other thread).
It's basically a pendant, with a photo compartment, in the shape of a bald eagle, with a relatively detailed fret cut front face to a design that I've come up with over the past couple of evenings - hopefully I've not bitten off more than I can chew, because some of the holes are very small, and there are around 140 of them... what could possibly go wrong?!
I'll post some more photos after today's efforts. Wish me luck!

Almost half way there and no disasters yet. I've made a few changes as I've gone along to get rid of a couple of virtually impossible cuts that I'd included in the initial design (I'm a bit new to producing cut patterns like this). The claws of the feet especially were crying out to break as soon as they'd been cut, so they got changed a wee bit along with a couple of bits in the birds body - but tweaks aside, it's looking more or less like a big bird of prey!
Right, a bit of lunch and then back to it.
:-)

Well that's all the fiddly bits done without any major problems - it's less delicate than it looks, but I'm going to go a bit careful with the next stage which involves shaping and hollowing the rough cut shape to make it more, well, eagle like!

Very impressive.

Super cutting! How thick is it?

mechanism man 03-27-2014 04:41 PM

Hi Stephen, thanks very much (and to everyone else). The wood is 3mm (1/8") thick mahogany. It cuts really well at this scale - the dust is nasty though and does make me feel a bit ropey if I don't mask up, but other than that it's great to work with.

Very, very nice!
How exactly will the compartment for the photo be implemented?
Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Spirithorse

Ok, so apart from the wing tip feather outline (to be cut next) there it is, one rough cut eagle.
As for the photo compartment, I have several different ideas, but I'm going to wait and see which way the wind takes me when it comes time to actually make it. I have a fair amount of space to work with so can do something quite mechanical and clever if the mood takes me, but be sure that I'll chart the success (or failure?!) of whatever I try over the next few days.
In the mean time though, I have to attack that beautifully delicate eagle with a 5000rpm dremel and partially hollow it out. Now I really do need some luck....
