My first bowl project - Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Message Board

I found this free fruit bowl pattern at High quality computer made restored scroll saw fretwork patterns, victorian, french, italian ... and boy did it look cool... and something we could use too!

I don't know whether we will use this one or it will be a prototype. I was too afraid to use expensive wood... just red oak and poplar. There are just too many things I don't know yet. For one... I have no idea of the boiled linseed oil will react with the wood glue. Hopefully it won't look bad... but I fear there is no way you won't be able to see the glue.

Brad -- That is an awesome design nicely done. Looks fantastic!! Please show us some more pics when you get the finish on it.

Still doing the finishing on the fruit bowl... but I am defintely not happy with my wood choices. There is no contast in the colors. In my tests pieces the poplar was way lighter than the red oak... but in my bowl it all kinda looks the same. I think it has something to do with the direction of the grain... but I don't know.

I still love the bowl pattern... it was joy to cut and put together... really fun... and I was amazed at how well everything fit. I will definitely be making more. I am wonder what wood I wood choose to make colors similar to what is shown on the pattern website? The whiter wood almost looks like some type of plywood and the darker I am not sure.

Well... I think this should pretty much do it. For the next one I am thinking of Appleply for the main bowl part and then either padouk or walnut for the rim and accents.
