Hi There. Well, here is the first half of my chess set. These pieces are cut from mahogany. The other half is going to be walnut. The design is "King Henry the Eighth" from Jim Kape's book "Making Wooden Chess Sets". And yes, I am making a board to go with it, however it is in the very early stages of construction and I needed something for the picture. Okay, how did I do? What can I do better? Thanks for looking.

Looking good so far John, that mahogany is one fine looking wood in my opinion. Are you planning on making the board with a draw to hold the pieces?

Beautiful, John!! You did great. I can't see anything you can do better. Please show us how the walnut pieces turn out.

Hi John, I think your chess set looks terrific so far, can't wait to see the other side.. I don't see anything that could be done better or different. Marsha

Spot on work, the bases are perfect. Really the only thing that I see is the knight's head, it's the most un-forgiving part of the set, but the ridges on top are nothing a tiny bit of sanding wouldn't take care of. Honestly though, I only notice as I've made lots of chess pieces, I wouldn't redo the piece because of it. Beautiful wood selection, I need to get me some of that ![]() Matt |

Thanks for the comments. @ DWSudekum - I am making the board out of walnut and mahogany. @ Hazmat - Thanks for the comment. I cut on the lines (pretty much) so when the groves showed up, I figured they were normal.

No worries Badger, it's great work all around, again your bases are nigh perfect. Its like they came off an assembly line. For me that knight is/was the toughest piece. That's why I changed it a few times, one time I made it skinny, one time I made it into a Gator head! Anything but cut that same design again, too hard! ![]() Matt |
