Default Gray Wolf

I'm trying something new for me - a little carving along with the fretwork. Design is by Gary Browning. 3/4" cottonwood with a #3 blade. Fretwork like this is not something I do a lot of! and the little bit of carving I've done has been hidden in the back of my cupboard for years! But - it's almost a new year, so thought I would get out of my box and see what I can do.

middle picture shows where I took a router (dremel trio!) and took the outside of the design down to about 1/4". Need to clean it up some...

Looks like a great start! You've picked a nice pattern to try this with.

Theresa, are you going to carve it with hand tools or a rotory tool?
Don't know how deep your carving will be, so, can't say how I would start. Maybe with the details first(eyes & nose). Does that sound logical. I have done some carving with the rotory tool & I just go for it. I'm somewhat of an artist, so I'm not afraid to jump right in. Good Luck & look forward to see it when you get more done. Thanks for sharing.

Hi ,T. You are going great.I am glad that we are stealing you from the intersia folks. And don't bother about the carving. This is not that mountain carving in the Black Hills,SD.
Way to go.

Perk - I was going to use hand tools - I have a set somewhere around the house. But I can't find them, so will use my dremel instead. I was going to start with the outside and work in, but I think your suggestion is better. So I will start with the eyes - thanks!

Seyit - lol you are right - it's not Mt. Rushmore! lol I wonder how that carver ever got started when I am hesitant to start in a little piece of wood! thanks for the perspective. As for intarsia - I do have a design hanging on my porch door being re-worked. I hope to start on that next week!

If I may make a suggestion. That looks great just the way it is. If you want to combine carving with fretwork, check out relief cutting. That way it will be more striking and more edge to carve on. I have just started and my Bride says the piece I am working on is going to stay at home. Usually her comment is "I think so-so would like that". There is a book on relief cutting that is in my shop that gives a lot of information. Can't think of the name of it now but it is a Fox book.......

Edit: The name of the book is Scroll Saw Relief . More info
