I had some aspen left over from the LI Woodworking show, and decided to try something a little different. I still need to cut a top ring, but I have to create a new pattern for what I want. The picture shows the rings cut and stacked, but not yet glued. I need to do the glue-up in stages so I can access the inside. I started the glue-up today, so maybe tomorrow I can do some more work on it. I think it should be really nice, but won't know for sure until the sanding is complete. |

What's the skinny on that project Carole....wood thickness, size of rings, angle degree? I hope this will be a WIP all the way through. Love pictures. THANKS

WD, it's plain old 3/4" thick aspen, starting out with a 20˚ cutting angle and 1/4" ring, using the wavy edge pattern from my book. However, with the second ring, I transition from a wavy edge to a circle for both top and bottom blanks, using a 25˚ angle. (It's the same technique I used with my "fertility goddess", and is one of the innovations I would put in a second book). I think I used a 35˚ for the third ring on the bottom half, and for the base. On the top, I used a 35˚ outside, 40˚ inside cut for the third ring. This gives extra width to the bottom (which becomes the top since it's inverted). I then added a top ring cut at a 10˚ angle, flaring out, and am planning to add a ripple edge to that, like the one on the last project in the book. I worked on adapting that pattern this afternoon. What I'm hoping to get is a vase with an interesting ripple curve, (like the fertility goddess, but not as pronounced, and with more lobes) topped by at matching ripple edge. Some moron in our shop broke the drum sander, so I can't work on segmented glue-ups since I need the sander to get a flat blank. So, in the meantime, I'm working on shapes, and may play with some interesting inserted rings. So much wood to cut, so little time . . . . . |

Geeezzzzz if someone deserves a shop of their own it certainly is you. Where is that magic wand when you need it. Hope the drum sander gets repaired soon, by the way did Rolf bring his Sandflee for a show and tell for you at the LI show?

Yes, Rolf brought it along, which was really nice of him. The main problem, for my purposes, is that it will smooth the side passing over the drum, but can't flatten a board so that it's of uniform thickness like a drum sander will. And if the board is not of uniform thickness, the rings will be lopsided. Although, there are tilted cakes, so maybe . . . .

Carole; This is going to be a very interesting piece. I will be watching this one. I like the variances you cut into the various rings to give a unique character. I was wondering if you have considered making one with your own laminated stock to get a particular pattern in the rings?

Going to be another unique bowl. I now have the book, but will not let myself start making anything from it until I get the "have to do" things done. Fran |
