Thanks for the encouragement Carole. I figured what with the saw kerf and the differences between the inside and outside there would be some slight offsets. There is the possibility that when I go to sand the inside and outside down that things will line up a little better as the sides get thinner. I did notice one thing while making the other bowl. I like to put plenty of glue on. Enuf so that it oozes out all the way around. Gives a guaranteed full, solid, glue joint. But I didn't file off the excess glue and it almost ruined one of the sanding drums by filling up the "pores" of the sandpaper. Haven't made that mistake this time. Today was a busy day and tomorrow will be too, so no more pictures till hopefully Friday. Should be able to work right on thru to the finish then. Pete |

A coupla more pictures of the Double Swag Bowl showing the glue-up and inside sanded. Need to glue the bottom on and then finish it. The top edge is just roughed in so you can see how the swags roll over the top. As you can see the layers don't line up exactly both left and right but was the best I could do. Pete |

Sweeeeeet looking Pete, what's the size of that bowl?, eager to see it finished. What do you use as your finish? What's next?

Coming along really well, Pete. And remember, the eye will "want" to see smooth curves, and no one except you will know it wasn't 100% perfect. (Actually, I don't think anyone ever reaches 100%--certainly I don't.) Looking forward to seeing the next step. |

Thanks for the compliments guys and gals they are appreciated. I guess the saying is right that says only the maker sees the mistakes. But the thing that really bothers me is that the Yellowheart lined up ok but the Purpleheart didn't. Glues all set up and I can start sanding the OD. WD, the bowl right now is 6 1/2". It'll end up a little thinner. I used Tung Oil on the last bowl but think I'll try the spray-on Shellac for this one and see how I like it. The next bowl I'll make is the Gingham Bowl that I posted the glue-up in the first message of this thread. But don't know for sure when I'll get to it as other things besides scroll sawing are on tap for quite a while. In fact I let them slide to do this bowl. You all will probably have the book by that time so don't know if a step by step is really needed. It's been fun doing these bowls and will look forward to making a few more in the future. Pete |

Pete, Your swag bowl is coming along beautifully, and being your own critic it seems, you are always harder on yourself. At least I know I am. But your are really doing a great job on those bowls. And I sure do appreciate the updates on how things are coming along, As I am sure other do as well. Keep up the good work. Bob |

Thanks Bob! I agree with you wholeheartedly about being my own worst critic. But then you'll only see the side of the bowl I want you to see. I chickened out and am putting on Tung Oil for the finish rather than the Shellac I mentioned. One more coat later today or tomorrow (old can and it's taking longer to dry than normal) and I'll post the "finished" picture. Pete |
