Carole,

Thanks for the explanation of how things can look slightly different from the inside to the outside of the bowl. Hadn't thought about that. I guess a lot will come down to which side a person wants to look the best.

Glad some are looking forward to progress reports. So am I! I can hardly wait to get to them to see how they turn out. Mostly to see if the "mistakes" will spoil the effect or just add a different "look" to it.

Pete,

I too am enjoying the progress reports you are posting, I followed your last your first bowl you made and must say it turned out great. Can't wait to see how things go for you on these bowls. I just recently have purchased Carole's book as well and am so excited to try my hand at them as well. But am still ordering supplies like wood and sanding supplies in order to make them. Won't really have time to start them tell closer to Christmas, as that is when I will have some time off from my work schedule to go at them.

So mean time I can only drewl, Ha Ha...... and get excited at your projects. So keep those pics. coming.

And yes I agree with your comment that I think Carole has done a wonderfull job explaining her book, and showing us how to master the bowls on the scrollsaw.

I'm going to start off with the Double Swag Bowl. I'll repost the glueup picture so you won't have to go back up the thread and find it.

Just got the rings and base cut out and then rough stacked so you can get an idea of what it'll look like.

Do the gluing up of the rings today, and start on the sanding tomorrow.

Pete

Lookin' good Pete, your rings fit rather well. I know all bowls may have a different angle, but what angle did you cut those rings?
So cool how those swags look.

Dan, WD & Sally,

Thanks for all the kind words. Much appreciated!

Letting the glue harden overnite. It hasn't turned out to bad. Everything seemed to line up ok except for one spot. Don't know why that would be if everything else lined up.

WD,

The angle this bowl is cut at is 28*, as was the other one I made. I haven't checked all the bowls in Carole's book but that seems to be the angle most are cut at. I think you'll like the end result too. Without the picture in the book when you do the glue-up it's hard to imagine what it'll look like when your finished.

Pete,

If it's any consolation, one of the bowls in the high-end book, "500 Wooden Bowls" has swags that are not perfectly aligned. In aligning rings, there are actually an infinite number of ways they can fit together--tiny differences that are barely noticeable when you glue it up. My book has two pictures of swags that were not quite right, pp. 23 and 133. Close, but no cigar. That's why I configured the pattern so the main swags span only 2 rings. 3 is nearly impossible. Even in Spielman's bowl book, he does little swags on one ring only. Over time, your eye gets trained so you can spot how something will work once it's sanded. The bow box that I recently posted was extremely demanding, since all the stripes had to be aligned to give the effect of a continuous ribbon. I can chart my progress by how close I can get to a perfect alignment.

That said, no one will even notice a small irregularity. One of the problems I'm seeing is that, not surprisingly, everyone is rushing to the more demanding projects, rather than starting on the simpler ones. There's no substitute for experience, learning what works and what doesn't.

Most of the bowls in the book use 3/8" wide rings, especially in the beginning of the book, which is why the cutting angle is 28˚. I wanted to allow enough wood so that any miscuts, drill marks, etc. could easily be sanded out. The 1/4" ring is more demanding--less wood for correcting mistakes, and uses 20˚ for a straight-sided bowl. You'll find larger angles wherever there are curved sides, since that's how to get the contour. FYI, vases are easier than bowls, because the inside just needs to be cleaned up a bit, not fine sanded, so you have all the wood to work with on the outside.

And Sally, all the instructions include cutting angles, so you don't have to think about it, unless you change the wood thickness. Even then, the formula I give is just a "plug in the numbers".

Looking forward to seeing your progress, Pete. Given the fact that you're pretty new to this, you're doing great!

Thanks Carole for the confidence booster - I can't wait to get started. It's an exciting project.
