Hello All I'm just about ready to start cutting the rings to make the Candy Dish from Carole's book. I'm using wood from a Bamboo cutting board. This is the first time I've worked with bamboo. Here is what I ahve up to this point. I'm hoping it will work out one I start cutting the rings so far it easy to cut and sand with stright cuts.

Nice job on the glue-up, Dan. It should look really nice when you cut the rings. Remember, the inside top edge will look strange until you thin it, then the curves will appear. Great use for a cutting board!

Nice job so far Dan. For me the glue-up is the hardest part, and it looks like you did a vety good job.. Until I got to the last picture I was wondering what edition of the book you got. The octagon didn't look familiar.Glad someone else is getting to one of these bowls. Looking forward to seeing how yours turns out. Pete |

Thanks Carole and Pete. I forgot to say that I did make an error some were in the cutting or sand of the parts for the glue-up it came out a little under size I had to reduce the pattern to 98% so it would fit. I'm hoping it wont cause any problems. I'm thinkng it wont since it suce a small reducrion. I going to have to wait untill the weekend to get started. I worked later then I had planned and it's about time to get Evelyn from her job and tomorrow we'll have the grandkids over to spend the night. The on Saturday Evelyn and I are taking part in a Memory Walk the place she work at has a team and I'm walking with her. So sometime after all this is over I'll get back in the shop.

Thanks for the pixs Dan....looking at the last photo, does this mean the bowl will be shallow with only one ring? How thick is the wood?

No WD not at all. In Carole's book she has pattern that only have one ring. You cut out the one ring ans then use it as a pattern for the next ring and that ring to make the next and so on. I hope this helps.

WD, for various reasons, it is sometimes preferable to use each ring as the pattern for the next one. It is the only way to cut curved bowls, and to insert rings of different wood for contrast. Using a multi-ring pattern is a good way to start, and preferable for patterns that rotate rings, or if cutting is not that precise. I discuss the different methods in the book, but if you have any more questions, just post them and I (or Dan or anyone else who is doing bowls) can answer them.

I really like the bowls from Carole's book, but where do you get the book? What book stores? I want to try some of the patterns, but is it sold on the newstand?

Ghornet, You can get Carole's book from Fox Chapel at this address: Fox Chapel Publishing - Woodworking books and magazines for the inspired woodworker If I recall past posts on here correctly that's the only place you can get it at this time if you want it now. Possibly Carole has them for sale. Pete oops! Just checked the above page again and see it's on back order. |
