I have some pics of the Wedding Coffin in progress. For those who didn't read my post in the Off Topic section, I was asked to make a coffin to be used for a card box at a dress-up Halloween wedding. After looking online at different style coffins I decided on the toe-pincher stlye. These pics show the initial rough construstion of the box and lid. I used 1"X6" pine boards recycled from shipping crates. I used my Dremel to rough up the box to make it look old and cut some fake grooves and nail holes to make it looked pieced together.

As I was building the initial box I was trying to decide how to fasten the lid to the box. In the process of thinking, being a devious, practical joking sort of guy, I thought it would be fun to devise a hidden attachment and watch the panic when they couldn't figure out how to get it open to retrieve their cards. So now my plan is to do just that and to compose a riddle with the clues on how to open it. The lid will be captivated by bolts through the back of the box and then plugs cut to conceal the bolt heads. A little caulking and paint should hide the plugs and the only visible means of locating them will be 6 tiny holes (#60 drill bit) in the center of the plug. A screw will have to be inserted in the hole and threaded in to pop the plug out to reveal the bolt heads. I used 1/4"-20 bolts and washers with a long rod coupling nut for the attachments to the lid. I glued and screwed them to the lid so I could torque it fairly tight. I drilled and countersunk the holes in the back to insert the bolts and then the plugs that will be 3/4" thick. Here's some pics of the beginning stages. More to come later.

Sounds like a fun idea - I hope you will be there to watch their reaction.

Ye gads man...I thought this was going to be just large enough to accommodate some cards....How big is that? Life size?

Terry Are you sure that is not to put somebody in seems pretty big for just cards. LOL Maybe you can make a hand reach up as people put their cards in. Might as well get the guests too. Have fun with it. It looks like you are so far.

Looks like a great idea! And you are doing a great job with it. Just hope no kids climb in it and close the lid if it is tricky to open, there could be some paniced people!
