Hello Everyone I got a start on my frist project from Carole's book. The Heart-Shaped Bowl. I found cutting at a 35° a bit of a challenge. When I first looked over the book I was a bit unclear on only having on pattern ring but after using this kind of pattern with this bowl it was a neat way to do it. You do have to be very carefull when you are cutting eash ring as it the pattern for the next ring. I'm using 3/4" Canary Wood for the bowl. I still havea lot of sanding to do both inside and out. I can see were an inflatable sanding ball would be a big help. I dont think I'll do much more today. Our Grandkind will be here soon and I know they will want to spend time with Pepaw. As always any and all comments are welcome. Thanks Carole for a great book I know I'm going to be busy making bowl's Evelyn has picked out one or two she want's me to make as Christmas gifts.

Hey Dan, Nothing like starting with the harder ones! Looks like it'll be really pretty when you've got it done. I never worked with thick canary wood, and can't wait to see how it comes out. Let me know how the instructions are--we tried real hard to make them clear, but it helps to have outside perspective. You're going to outclass me before long. Enjoy the grandkids! |

Thanks Carole. You have to wait a bit more. While waiting for the Grandkids to get here I was doing a sanding on the outside of the top ring........using the disc sander on my belt/disc sander the piece caught and it got tossed across the shop and broke when it hit the wall. I'm not doing really well with these bowls at this stage. I have some more Canary wood so I'll cut another one. This one might start out a bit better now that I've done one. I think I might need to put of foam padding all arouind were I'm working or walking when I have a bowl in my hand LOL. So far I've found the book easy to under stand. As i said I was a bit on clear on the one ring pattern but that was because I had not read the first part of the book. Once I read that it became very clear.

Aw, Dan, I'm so sorry. This is starting to happen too often to you. I find that I have to hold on real tight when I'm using anything that spins--disc sander, drill press, etc. As a result I have tendinitis in my left elbow, but very strong wrists! Be sure to wear eye protection so nothing can come back at you and do real damage. Sometimes edges do catch, so I've learned to be really cautious. Well, the next one should be even better! |

Sally I got mine from Fox Chapel. If you click on the home at the upper rigt ahnd corner it will take you SSW&C home page then click on the Fox Chapel tab. you should be able to fine it there. I placed my order for the book back in July but I would think they should still have some. It's a great book that I know you'll like. I have another bowl cut out and glued up. I do some sanding on it tomorrow and post some pictures. I need to take a break today, The Grandkids really wore me out yesterday. And I also need to try and find the base of the new bowl I cut it missing right now and for the life of me I dont remember were I put it.

Well, Sally, Dan does have a special place in my heart for all the effort he's putting into his bowls and vases, but I had nothing to do with his getting the book, honest! I asked about the delay at Amazon, Borders, etc. and the reason is that FCP has to be sure the books will be in as promised. So that's why the date is so far out. Apparently these stores then plan their budgets and advertising, so even if the book comes in early (which it did!) they are not likely to be able to change the release date. They have to get the book from the warehouse to the distributor to the vendors, so that takes time, too. At FCP, they have the books in their warehouses, so can get them out faster. So right now, it's a tradeoff--price v. availability. (I usually opt for price, but I tend to be too tight about money for my own good.) I never play favorites--just ask my kids! |

Well I rested some, but I just coud not wait untill tomorrow to start sanding this Heart- Shaped bowl. I spent about 45 min. or more using my pad sander mounted on my drill press to sand the inside. starting with 80 grit and ending with 220. I also did another 30 min or so hand sanding to get rid of sanding marks using 220, 320 and 0000 steel wool. I glued the bottom on and how I'm ready to work on the inside. That I'm going to have to wait on untill my new sanding disc's arrive. It would be nice to use my belt sander but with the different angles I dont think it would work all that well. As always any and all comments are welcome.

Dan, love the way the grain worked out on the inside of the curved sections. Did you plan it that way, or did it just happen? I'm impressed at how nice and regular the inside is at the bottom--not so easy to do. When you sand the outside, you'll have to decide how to handle the top edge. You can flare it outward or inward, or just thin it evenly from both sides. And you probably have enough wood at the base to curve the bottom inward if you want. Just keep feeling the thickness, take it slow, and you should be OK. BTW, I was down at the shop earlier today, sanding one of my new projects, and the edge caught on the light by the drill press and sent it flying. Fortunately, it was still thick enough not to be damaged, but machines that spin are to be respected. Looking forward to seeing the finished bowl--should really be something to be proud of. |
