Thanks for the nice comments Jerry and Carole. No Carole it was not planned, the Canary wood I had was not wide enough to make the bowl so I glued two pieces together and I put the center line at the point were the two boards were glued. I had not noticed the effect it gave untill you made the comment. I going to try and thin the inside edge so it flares out. I'll post more pictures as I get to that point. I'm also going to get some shallac to see how it works I've never tried it before but seeing how the projects in the book look I want to give it a shot.

Thanks Marshall, Sally and m_r_dxn for the nice comments. I got my new sanding disc and a new pad I ordered from Klingspor's Woodworking Shop. It the 2" Flexi-Pad so I was able to get some sanding on the out side of the bowl. I spent about another hour on it and I think it coming along nicely. Just for fun I weighed the bowl before I started sanding it weighed 10.83 oz. after the sanding I did it weighed 9.70 oz. I have much more sanding to do to get everthing smoothed out and ready to finish. I learned something today. Dont sand to much at one time and get the wood to warm you get what Carole calls in her box "ring creep" correct me if that not the correct term Carole. It were the ring move out of place a bit because ofthe glue geting soft from the heat of samding. I'm going to have to resand the inside a little bit nothing real bad.

Dan, your bowl is turning out lovely, I love that canary wood. I also ordered my book through FCP, but I haven't received it yet, now I'm getting real anxious. Thanks for sharing Marsha

Dan, you're right that the heat of sanding can soften the glue. While it's not likely to move the rings out of position--that's usually due to climate changes--it's a good thing to avoid. I read about "cool sanding" in a really good lathe book. It's also a good idea to avoid sanding too much in any one place to avoid thin spots. You can actually go about 1/8" thick without the bowl falling apart. I use my fingers as calipers to gauge the thickness of the sides. You should have enough wood to let you sand out any drill and cutting marks, and get the shape you want. Those Klingspor pads are great, and once Santa brings you the inflatable ball from KA Tools (see inside back cover of SSW&C for their ad) you'll find it makes sanding the inside a lot easier. You can just chuck it into the drill press just like the pads. I can't wait to see how this bowl comes out when you're done. It should really be gorgeous. |

Yer doing a fine job Dan. What kind of dust extractions system are you using? Looking forward to the finish on it, and waiting for my book to come. I ordered it from Amazon and the expected delivery time is Jan 2010.

Hello Everyone Thanks Carole, Merle and WD for the nice comments. WD when I started standing this bowl I did not have a dust collection system for the drill press I was using, That changed to day when I took the mobile base that my band saw was on, cut a new piece of plywood and put my drill press on it. How I can more it to were my dust collector is and with a zip tie I was able to have the hose close to were I was sanding it works really good. I finished sanding the outside and put on one coat of Shallac. I'm not sure yet how many coats I'll use. I'm happy with the way it came out. I'll post the finished bowl in the bragging section after I'm happy with the finish. This was a fun project and it helped me with my sanding and thinning of the edge of the bowl. So Carole how did it do with the edge on this bowl? As always any and all comments are welcome.
