I started cutting Bubba's triton trumpet two days ago. I am cutting it, on my top feeding Hawk, in 19/32" cherry - happened to have a piece that fit. I am using 2/0 RT blades in holes drilled with a 1/32" bit. I go through a blade every 1-15 cuts, depending on the size of the cut, and have completed 75 so far. I estimate 200 or so more to go. I would normally cut from the center out but the wood is so strong that I am able to cut from the top down without sacrificing strength or risking breakage. Picture 1 is the front. Pictures 2 and 3 are of the back. Thinking ahead, here is my question - I am going to use this as a wall hanging against a light yellow wall so do you think it will be better without a backer or with a colored backer (what color)? As usual all comments and criticisms are greatly appreciated. george triton front.JPG triton back 1.jpg triton back 2.jpg

If it's strong enough to survive without a backer - leave it open.

Don't you just love it when a pattern fits a piece of scrap........you are doing great, eager to see it finished. My vote is no backer unless you don't want the yellow showing through.

I'd have to see what it looks like with the yellow wall before I could decide....Looks great so far..

Thats looking GOOD George! Bubba done GOOD too! LOL. I think Mikes right, See what it looks like on the wall first, then if you wanted, try different backgrounds.I sometimes trim construction paper and use that as a rough guide to what color would look best behind my fretwork.Hope you get it finished this weekend! ![]() Jerry

Wow, I see you went with the original, more difficult, pattern. It's looking impressive, and with a hard wood like cherry, too. It's going to look super. As for the backing, I would probably choose not to use one, for the simple reason that the color would probably not come through anyway once it is hung on the wall. With light behind it you might could discern a color, but up against the wall, well, I'm guessing you won't even be able to see the yellow because the cuts are not that large. I would have someone hold it up against the wall while I stood back to see the results, then decide, as has already been suggested. However you do it, it's going to look great! Bubba

As of last night, I was up to 170 internal cuts. I think that there are about 50 more to go. Boy does cherry vary in hardness from parts that eat a blade inside of 5 minutes of cutting and parts that let you cut for what seems forever. It's a glued up piece of a board given to me by a friend so I guess I really can't complain. As to the backer, your suggestions are great. I will try it against the wall before cutting the outline and if the color shows through I will try it with various backer colors first. I hope to have it finished by tomorrow. george
