Hello I'm working on a project from Steve Good, The Pocket watch and holder. I have the watch part cut and I've started sanding. I not all that happy with it though. I did'nt get the hole for the watch insert centerd it's off by about 1/16" of an inch. I've posted some photos with and with out the insert. Maybe I'm being to pickey about it but I think I should do it over. I would like your feed back on how your think it looks. Be truthful about how your think it looks and if I should redo ot leave it as is.

Dan They don't look that bad. Check out the thread in the info exchange section titled "finding center of a circle" I put a simple pattern on there for a tool that will help you with making them. Just a suggestion but rather than remake them use the center from the forstner bit and spin them on the sander. Its already marked for you. Tim |

Dan The thread is "how to find center of a circle" posted by Sally here is the link How to find the center of a circle? I think the pattern for the tool is on page 2 or maybe 3. She was making them too and had about the same results. Tim |

Dan, I agree with Tim it looks pretty darn good. Look at the thread he mentioned Sally had the same problem.

Probably no one will notice it. We are own worst critics. If you decide to do it over, send me the old one and I will use it for a coaster. Tom

Well, I can see where it is off-center. Now if it were mine I'd be losing sleep over it until I had it centered somehow, but I am the world's worst nit-picker (comes with being an artist). However, you've had some great suggestions and I'm sure this can be fixed without a re-do. I know how you feel, though. I do like knotheads suggestion also...LOL Bubba

I really feel kind of dumb, Just after I posted this I had the thought to sand the side the was bigger and I was going to come back and say that, Just to find that some else had the same idea. The center for this project is marked on the pattern I just was'nt as careful as I should have been. I think I should have center punched the center point and then drilled the hold, I do find that centering a forstner bit is a little hard. I'm going to keep this one Tom, I guess you could use it as a shot glass coaster, the in side hole is 1-3/8" in dia. I'll guess since I'm going to use this part I have to post some more pictures as I move along with it. Thanks for the feed back.

Just a thought for something that small. I think to avoid drilling off center, I would drill the recess in a blank piece of wood first. Then just take a compass to draw the outer circle. The forstner bit leaves a center dimple and would be perfect for the pin end of the compass. In fact, for making a bunch to sell, you wouldn't even need a pattern. Just drill a bunch of the clock holes in a board, mark the circles with a compass and cut away. Ray

Hay Ray that's a good idea. I going to have to give that a try to see how it work out. I have it sanded down to were I like it and it feel right in my hand. I need to put a coat or to of some kind of finish on it and cut the stand. I'm using 1/4" Bubinga the pattern call for 1/2" for the watch case and stand and 1/4" for the base and backing of the stand. All I had was 1/4" Bubinga and only enough fo rthe case and stand I think I might use some 1/4" red oak for the stand and backing or maybe poplar or maybe...... well I just dont know I'll ahve to play around with that part to see what will look good.
