Over the past few days I've been working on glueing up three blanks for my next vase. I had some left over poplar, red oak and walnut so I cut them in to 1" wide strips for the poplar and 3/4" wide strips for the red oak and walnut. I used my belt sander to sand the fronts and back flush. I have no idea jsut what it's going to look like when it cut into rings. I'll post some more pictures as the section come together. I dont know when I'll start cutting maybe next week while I'm on vacation or tonight if I cant wait.

Thanks for posting the WIP. It will be interesting to see how that turns out. You can kind of get an idea by looking at the flat as the bottom of the piece and then mentally wrapping it up the sides of the finished vessel. Are you going to use the same general pattern as your last one or do something different? --Rob |

G'day Dan, It's fun gluing up various colours of timber and then cutting them to see what the pattern will look like. I think this one will be a beaut.

Hi Dan, Nice laminations--making three had to take some time! If you haven't started cutting yet, check your wood thickness before you start to be sure it isn't much thinner than 3/4". I've found that when sanding laminations, sometimes they come out a bit thinner than when they started. If so, you'll need to increase your cutting angle a bit. Also, as you cut each ring, mark the top so you can keep the rings in the same orientation when you glue them up. The red oak should form beautiful swags that will appear like magic. It should be a really dramatic vase--can't wait to see how it comes out. |

just a idea Dan, what if you cut at a angle across the whole thing, in 1" pieces, then glued them together. then did your circle cuts. the angle would propose many other things. just a thought. your friend Evie

Thanks everyone for the comments, I'm going to have to wait for a few days before I start cutting, we having family in from out of town and Evelyn and I are trying to get things ready for them. But I'll post some pictures when I get the first section cut. Carole I did check the thickness of my blanks and the are just a little less te 3/4" I think I use the same 20 dig. angle I did with the last vase I think it should be ok. I did think about doing what you said Evie, I think I'm going to give that a try next time. I really want to get started, right now it kind of like looking at a Christmas gift all wrapped up you can wait to see whats in side, I'm hoping there's going to be a beautiful vase in those blanks.

I had some time so I was able to get the base of the vase cut out. It was rather surprising how it came out. I learned that I should have made sure I had enough wood to made the blanks bigger so I chould of had the pattern in the center of the blank. I still like the way it looks. I post some more picture one I get it glued up and sanded down. As always any and all comments are welcome.
