Hello Everyone I'm working on another vase, this time in red oak. I added two rings to the base to give it a little more mass and a bit more hight. I have the top section of rings glued up and drying, I going to add an extra ring to the top but I'm not sure if it will look better with that ring going in toward the center or out. I'm going to cut both rings and see which one looks best. As always any and all comments are welcome. Oh this vase is a bit larger over all I enlarged the pattern 10%.

Looks real nice, Dan. I like the way you're keeping the grains aligned--makes it look like you did it from one big block of wood. Please post more pictures when you've added the next section.

Dan, That is going to be awesome...I too would like more pics I'm not sure how it all goes together. Did you already share whose book you are using?

I finished the top section last night and glued it in place, I put a coat or two of clear coat on and sanded it down I think this will maybe save some time when I put the finish on. I still need to do some sanding on the area were the top and bottom section join. I posted two pictures of the top rings just set on top. One with one ring and one with two rings. I'm not sure yet with one I'll go with. Let me know what you think.

Can you do 1 & 1/2 rings added to the top? I'm undecided--they both look great.

Very nice, Dan. I personally think that the one ring is more appealing to the eye. Also think that the extra bottom ring for stability makes sense, as well as it looks better than just the small piece from the middle of the rings. JackM |

Looking good, Dan. I'm also in the one-ring on top camp. You might also want to see how it looks with an extra ring on the bottom. Vases often look more balanced of the foot and the lip match. --Rob One ring to top it off and in the woodshop find 'em |

Thanks for all the nice comments and help. After much thought I went with just one ring, it looked the best. I did think about adding another ring at the bottom Rob but to me and Evelyn it did'nt look right. It's all glued up and sanded and had another coat of clear coat with was also sanded down some how it ready for the finish 4 or 5 coats of gloss lacqure. I'll post it in the bragging section when thats done. I said that I enlarged the pattern by 10% I should have also said this did cause some minor problems. The rings were to flush with each other more of a stair step effect inside and out. I E-mail Steve Good about it and he said that since I enlarged the pattern I need to change the angle of the blade entry holes and scroll saw table to about 21 dig. I try that next time.

Very cool. Glad it's turning out so well. Tell anybody who examines it so closely as to notice the inside finish that they need to get a life (Or make their own!)--Rob |
