I am making this for me and my wife's 20th anniversary on the 29th of July. This is the first time ive been able to make time to make dust in a while. I hope to finish it up this weekend. In Sue Mey's picture it shows the backing cut to the size of the cross. I think it looks great! but I was contemplateing maybe cutting the backing board to frame in a shadow box frame and put it under glass.I would really value every ones opinions and suggestions. The heart on the right side snapped due to a fault in the ply. I have another section cut to glue in place when done ( THANK GOD FOR WOOD GLUE) Last edited by mrcutit; 06-20-2009 at 12:08 AM. |

| In the design Sue mey shows, the backer is placed under the cross after the center work is cut, and the outline of the cross and backer are both cut out at the same time, what I was thinking of doing is maybe cutting a full sized backer to fit a frame and glueing the cross onto that, or maybe even a double backer, one as Sue showed , and then glueing both onto the frame backer. what do you think?

Personally,I think the wife is going to want to touch it (I would),but maybe a compromise on the shadow box....Attach the cross to the box with velcro, so it could be removed for "show and feel". I was celebrating my 19th birthday on yall's wedding day btw Hope yall have a wonderful anniversary!Jerry

G'day DJ, Very nice. Jerry's thinking outside the box for inside the box sounds like a win win. Actually the cross would make a great wedding present without the No

D.J. it is looking good - a few people have also extended the backer size by half an inch or so all round...this way the backer 'frames' the cross. I would never have thought of putting it in a shadow box, looking forward to completed photos |

Mr. C. your have a nice idea. Why not stick with it? Too bad about the heart... that's not your fault. What you have done so far looks real good. Hope you get it finished in time. As a side note: I hate working with Baltic Birch plywood. It chips and falls apart very easy. Surely they can manufacture a better plywood. Maybe something with thicker plys? Maybe they might consider using better glues to hold the plys together. I just don't like the stuff. Enough said.

Looking great. I like your idea of the shadow box. It will really set it off.

Mr C - I have cut Sue's wedding cross (similar to the anniversary cross). I then ordered some acrylic sheets from Sloans and cut that as a backer. I cut the cross from red oak and put a sea blue backer (cut smaller than the cross and attached using CA glue). I like the way the blue and oak contrast - unfortunately - I delivered the cross without taking a pic. I will cut another and make sure I take a pic next time. As to the use of BB plywood for projects - I know that it is more expensive but I have moved to cutting only hardwoods . I never deal with chip out anymore and I like the variety of colors you can get with hardwoods. Just my two cents. George |
