Default Back in the saddle

So winter was getting me down, my mangled thumb was depressing and the economy was really starting to do a number on my headspace; so I did the only thing a reasonable wood worker could do. Get back at it. I need pics for an article so I am just doing the project over. Once set of chess pieces are cut and the second set is waiting patiently on the bench!

You are going to make me again aren't you. Make another wonderful Chess set to drool over and make this mere mortal feel insiginificant. . .

Looks great and you wouldn't be able to tell that you are one finger down.

You should just go for it Dragyn, once you get the compound cutting down it is really a lot of fun. i am sure you would do just as well as the rest of us who have tried it! And yes, I did burn through some wood learning the whole compound cutting thing but oh well.

Where did you say you got the plans for the chess pieces again? I may just have to try!

Dragyn, I heard a rumor that we might see that pattern in a favorite magazine of ours some time......

Thomas, looking good there my friend. It's now a multiple award winning pattern.

What kind of wood are you using, that looks a bit like cherry.

Black walnut and mahogany, like the last one. i am also running some ideas around in my head around the case design. I am thinking of doing the drawers like the first one but when you open them you can remove an insert type box that holds the pieces. That way when you play you can remove the box from the drawer, shut the drawer and use the boxes to place the pieces in while you play. I will have to think it through but if I make the board squares a little smaller than the first version and then enlarge the case slightly it should work. I will have to do some serious math to figure it out but it should be a fun exercise. Oh, and I think I will use either finger joints or dovetails for the joinery on the case. And yes, look for the pattern in our favorite magazine!

Nice going Thomas, looking good so far. Me and the 4 x 36 belt sander argued a little the other day, just lost a little skin is all.

I look forward to seeing those chess pieces in our favorite magazine. I dont know how to play chess, and I have no desire to learn how to play the game, but I have always wanted to make a chess board and set, and your set looks fantastic!
