Default Chess Set Underway

I'm starting a set based on the Notre Dame pattern made out of Cherry and Padauk. I just love the contrast in those two woods, it's almost as perfect as Maple and Walnut.

I've cut the pieces and run the based on a disk sander to get them flat. I then cut the borders on the bases so I have a perfect size when I find the center for the holes for the weights. I then cut the holes for the weights with a 7/8 inch forstner bit. That's as far as I've gotten. I hope to drill the inside cuts tonight and then start cutting pieces.

Can't wait to see the progress on the chess set. It looks like you are off to a good start. The two woods chosen are a nice contrast. You don't need maple and walnut to have a nice contrast. Very good.

Default Chess Set

Looks great. You'll have fun with that one. I just saw that one made back from 2005 when I was googling chess set patterns.

I just finished making a board and the pieces but still have to stain the pieces. I just ordered a book that is supposed to have nine patterns for chess sets.

One question: Do you think the two colors of the pieces need to match the board?

Thanks

Rick, Last year when I was looking for chess set patterns, I got that book too. It has good patterns, but they really didn't appeal to me. So I made my own patterns. This is one of them.

As for the weights, it's a new wrinkle in my designs. I've talked to serious chess players and they feel all pieces should be weighted. So what I did was bore a 7/8ths inch hole that I will put lead shot into, glue into place, fill with either putty or wood filler, then cover with felt.

At bass pro shops, 3 1/2 pounds of lead shot is $10. I don't think I'll need that much. Just enough to add an ounce or so to the pieces.

Jim - I think the lead weight is a good addition. The extra weight make them harder to tip over. And the lead gives the pieces a nice feel. Great idea!
