Hi All: Thought I'd share with you, my latest scrollsaw projects. I've been practicing some of the projects from John Nelson 'Scroll Saw Workbook.' I didn't include Exercise 1 as it's just a grouping of lines. Good practice! Each is cut from a 3/4" 4 1/2" x 5 1/2 pine block except for the Bear Puzzle 3/4" 4 1/2" x 7" pine block Exercise 2 is the 'Cat' Exercise 3 is the 'Fish' Exercise 4 is the 'Butterfly' and took the most time which was expected. Exercise 22 is the 'Bear Puzzle' Yep, just couldn't wait had to jump right ahead. Probably a mistake! I wasn't able to get a good fit with the puzzle pieces. I followed the lines really carefully, maybe the Spiral blade wasn't the thing to use. Back to Exercise #5 to be continued. Tee hee I put my scrollings in WIP as I plan to woodstain some and paint others. Oh almost forgot the 'Rooster' he is from the lastest Scroll Saw Fall Issnue. The Rooster is cut from 1/4" Basswood. I sanded and incised the body and will give him a colorful paint job befitting a dapper fellow such as himself. As always I appreciate you comments and suggestions for improvement. Sorry, some of the images are blurring, no correction of your eyes are necessary--just mine. KathyRo

KathyRo, I think you did a good job on your cuttings. I'd like to see them again after you've put on the finish. I really like what you did with the rooster. David

Regarding Mr. Rooster Oh almost forgot I confess my short comings and or boo, boo's Viewer's left Rooster's foot I broke during the sanding process. To make the repair I drilled a hole in each end of the foot and cut a piece of tooth pick to act as a dowel. Glued one end inserted the tooth pick dowel. Glued the other end and inserted it into the other end. So far all has held well. I used Elmer's wood glue interior. KathyRo

Ok, cat....good, fish, even better, butterfly, pretty good.Quickly you learn the skills that will help you cut those frets without getting any burning in them, it could be a combination of things, from blade choice, to wood choice, to saw speed and technique, as well as a few others. All in all though, the butterfly looks pretty nice too.The bear... well, you already know, wrong blade for that guy! And the rooster, hes looking pretty good, but Im guessing once you work your finishing magic, he will become a real work of art! so all in all, Id say your doing great!

Hi guitarman, always wanted to learn to play a guitar. My son played electric guitar in High School I think it was mainly to get the girls...LOL Thank you, for your nice compliment and I will post the finished pieces. Dale, thank you for your critique, the fish was the easest for me. Yelp had burns with each one I did. I'm ordering some new blades soon (Hope it helps). My scroll saw has just ON or OFF, my next one will have variable speed, blower, easy change blades and anything else I can think of. LOL Thank you again, KathyRo

G'day Kathy, You are one brave lady, jumping in the deep end with spiral blades. I still haven't got the hang of them. All pieces are looking good, but as has been mentioned, a flat blade is the go with puzzles. Adult puzzles, use a fine blade, #1-#2, Kiddies puzzles I use a #5-#7 because I don't want to frustrate the kids. Using the larger blades makes it easier for them to fit the pieces. Keep on keeping on, youdungood

| Hi JohnB, thank you, for your comment and tip on puzzle blades. I have been checking out Mike's Workshop and have emailed him about blades and received some suggestions from him. I do think I'll place an order though him including some puzzle blades too. Thanks Again, KathyRo

KathyRo You did a fine job on those cuttings. I do cut a lot of those cats without the base. I fit it on leftover wood that I would normally throw away. Some I paint white or black and some I just varnish. Kids love them and I sell a lot of them at the fairs. Diane

Hi Diane, thank you for your kind compliment I really appreicate it. Speaking of the cat my plan is to finish it for my youngest granddaughter who is a cat lover. She has three cats all who chose her and she adopted them. So I need to make two more and paint them according to their coloring. It will go in her Christmas stocking in California. I certainly can see why kids love them and they sell well. Our carving club will have a Show & Tell Table at our Prescott Court House Square coming up soon. If I have them finished I'll take them along to get comment. We also carve and give a way small carvings to the kids. It's a lot of fun! KathyRo

Nice Job Kathy! I really like the Rooster. As for the Spiral blades,I bought a small packet of them to try and could not follow a line worth a darn with them and did not like the large kerfs. Think I used 1 and the rest are still in the tray after 5 yrs. They just were not for me! I have to give you credit for using them on that project. |
