this is still a work in progress because I still need to make the landscaping and clear coat to complete my Majestic Elk project...

That is looking great, do you ever sleep? It sure looks like your choice of wood is working well.

I was just over reading Tor's "Show Entry" thread and it got me to thinking about my elk here..
all I can say is that I love all the critics we have here on this message board, if it wasn't for them giving me the encouragement I needed, I might not of finished this piece..

I'm my own worse critic, sure I have a few small gaps between a few pieces.
as for my wood selection, it SUCKS...I made this project with wood I had on hand. it might not be perfect, but I did get it finished and that's what counts!
and who know, it might even win a ribbon at the fair...

to all the great critics, thanks for being here....

Default I've just been informed by Mrs.Trout...

that I need to finish up this project and that I can't start a new one until I get the boat gone over and gone fishing...

Well, with an attitude like that you will just have to force yourself to go fishing. Have fun.

Trout...we are ALL our own worst critics. Every piece I make has gaps and flaws that only I know about. Remember- they're not meant to be viewed with your nose to the piece - but 3 to 5 feet away. If you have gaps that YOU think are too big- simply spray the inside of the backing with black spray paint before you glue it on- it'll do wonders for making the gaps invisible. As for the wood - I always encourage people to use the wood you have- not the exact woods I use when making a project for the magazine. If it's an extra special piece then you may want to go "wood hunting" but otherwise-there's absolutely nothing wrong with using what you have. I think you're doing a great job and this looks like a challenging piece for anyone. There's a project coming up in the next issue of the "other magazine" of a ram that you may find helpful for future 4 legged critters like these. They're not as easy as they look! Keep it up!!!

Another tip...when I complete something that I have found to be challenging- the next piece I make is nice and simple. It gives you that instant gratification and reassurance to get ready for another challenge!

Trout--
Don't be too hard on yourself. The craftmanship is far superior to what 99% of us put here and as a Admiral Nelson said, "Damn the critics, full speed ahead."

If I want a critic, I turn it over to my 14yo son. He can find a flaw in anything I do!
