Default Dick's Carved Fretwork -- Sort of

So this is some serious stealing, stealing that is of Dick's ideas and methods from the most recent issue of the magazine.

I know it is not a cat and I will bet it won't be nearly as cool as Dick's, I'm just hoping I don't ruin a good fret piece.

The pattern was made for me by Andy Deane. Andy is totally awesome, that guy makes fine patterns and has done many awesome ones for me in the short time I've known him. If you ever get the chance, cut one of Andy's patterns. Better yet contact him and talk about it, he is a super guy.

Home Page - 80 Art Designs

You can see that I've already routed the sides down, covered the piece with clear packing tape and started on the fretwork.

I am going to carve this to some extent. It has been a challenge to find the bits here locally. I've come up with a few between Home Depot and Wal-Mart, I'll see how that does.

Man I hope I don't mess this all up lol

That is a very interesting pattern. I bet it's going to look great when you are done with the relief carving.

If you are having difficulty finding the Dremel Carving Bits locally, you can order them directly by phone 1-800-4-DREMEL (1-800-437-3635) Order by bit number, have your credit card handy, price is $5.85 for each carving bit.
Note: It's not stealing when the information is willingly provided. I admire your enthusiasm to attempt something new with such gusto. Go for it!!!

Tom,
What a great pattern. Really looking forward to seeing the finished product. I'm sure you're going to do a perfect job on it.

Gosh ... what can I say? You caught me totally off guard with your post here Tom!! LOLOL Thank you so much for all the kind comments. It's people like you that give us pattern makers the incentive to continue trying to improve our techniques. I'm not good at taking so much praise but it seriously does the heart good to know that what I do is so well received and appreciated. Kind of speechless here.

As for what you're doing with this project, you know I can't wait to see the finished result. Eager anticipation is an understatement!!! Motivation from this group has been growing exponentially lately and this is a fine example. We all want our projects, whether it's scrolling, carving, turning, wood burning, or pattern making to be looked at as artwork. Pushing the limits and combining skills like you have is what takes it all to the next level.

Thanks again Tom! Thanks to all the other designers who give me inspiration and thank you to the members of this forum who contribute with ideas, finished pieces of work, knowledge ... I'm so proud to be a part of it all and be able to contribute in some manner.

Andy

It is basswood. The fretwork is nearly done, unfortunately I didn't get any cutting done last night. For some reason the wife felt like I should hang out with her... It keeps her from thinking that I am cheating on her with my saw

The fretwork is finally done. Don't ask about the delays, I got sidetracked once or twice or ......

The scary part will soon commence. As I look at the fretwork, I suppose that I will go around the edges and carve down the edges certainly that are not car or plane to nearly the board. I'm thinking I should carve out some "inside" that is not car and plane. And something with the mountains.

What do you all think?

Great interpretation of an idea. To my mind this is what the magazine and this forum is all about. Since I became more adept at scrolling, I rarely use a pattern straight from the mag/book. I either make my own or adapt what I have seen and good practical and artistic ideas like Dick's can be utilised on many patterns.

It's a case of not re-inventing the wheel, as I see it, and I can only thank others, like Dick, for doing all the hard work for me. Long may it go on!
