Good evening everyone! I haven't had much to brag about lately. Just a start on my Christmas items. This is what I call a "rockin reindeer", but it really is a candy dish. P1010060.jpg It's an old Berry Basket pattern that is one of my favorites!! Fairly easy to make unless (like me) you can't always cut a straight line!! I haven't finished it yet and am open to suggestions on what to use. He's made from oak. I made several of these the first year I started scrolling and I didn't put a finish on them. I claim newbieness, I didn't know any better!! Looking forward to hearing your suggestions!! Thanks for looking!!

Cathy, Really nice cutting. What thickness oak is that? I haven't any idea on the finishing, I'm struggling with that myself on my pieces right now. I really need to find a craft painting class somewhere.

Cathy, newbieness, how funny. you could teach us a few things. this is a nice project. I could see it in a more life size rocking dear. I just love the treads. with the little screwarly things. is that a word???/ any way I have a hard time painting wood. maybe just a dot or two of holly hear and there. or maybe a hit of a harness of bells around the neck, just some thougths, but it looks great just like it is. your friend Evie

I like .How did you ensure the rockers are aligned, Cathy? I made something similar once and had difficulty getting them aligned properly. They wobbled rather than rocked! I swore if I ever made another I would stack cut the rockers but only after having drilled holes so I could insert dowels afterwards and ensure perfect alignment. It looks as if your technique is better than mine. Gill

Hi Cathy! Nice piece! How big is it? 5 levels wide with each level 1/4 in oak? (Thus skating past my original "how high" question after noticing the ruler in the background.... I guess that shows how much attention I was paying )I'm still trying to figure out finishes myself, so can't give any good suggestions on that. --Rob Great Goulessarian! Now you have me singing! Mike, I used 1/4" oak. I don't plan on painting it as I like the natural wood look. But I love your idea Evie about the harness of bells!! Rob, I really didn't know I had the ruler in the picture!! He is 8" tall and 8 1/2" wide. Now Gill your question is harder to answer!! I have no technique. I think it was one of those things that you don't realize it was suppose to be hard!! I lay one side down and glue on the individual pieces, wait to dry. Put glue on the other side of the pieces that are already attached, stand him up, align the other side to those clamp it and let it dry. Does that make sense??

Cathy, It must be the picture, it looks thinker than that and I haven't seen any oak ply that thick. Again, nice work...I like Evie's harness idea...
