I used some food dyes to stain a couple of puzzles I made of a parrot and pelican. Gave the bright clean colors I wanted.

I've used food coloring in the paste form for a lot of things. Colors come out nice. You can dilute with water to get the exact shade you want.

I have also used the clothing dyes sold in all grocery stores and drug stores. Both are alot cheaper than the dyes used sold in the craft stores.

I was musing about that myself the other day - do you mean the powdered kind of dye that you mix with water? If so, do you use the dyes at the recommended strength or with less water to make the colour more concentrated?
