almost ruined

I almost ruined my wine bottle holders..
It started off with the red oak stain that I was using did want to dry.
then when I put on the clear coat it didn't want to dry eather plus it was pulling up the stain?? and that's after 2 day...

I tried to help it out by putting then in the oven at a very low heat but all I got was tiny little blisters...luckily steel wool took care of the blisters but I need to get another clear coat on them so I came give them away tomorrow..

any idea's on why my stain and clear are not dring?

It might be, that you had to much moisture in the wood, or to much moisture in the stain.

Where did you store the wood before you tried to finish it.

And, what was the temperature in the shop?

Can you try staining a small area in the back of the piece, and then try spraying a small area in another section in the back.

What stain and coating did you use?

Did you by any chance happen to use a Minwax stain, or was it some other "oil" based stain?

Sometimes it is low temperature in the drying area.

Sometimes it is excess moisture or oil in the wood.

Sometimes the stain is just old. If the solvents evaporate too much in the can the resulting paste will almost never dry properly, even if you add extra solvent.

Sometimes it is just holiday gremlins.

yeah, it's been getting down to the high 20's at night..that's cold for California..

I was getting down to the bottom of the cans and since I've been using better wood I haven't been staining.
I did get a fresh can of clear and it seams to be drying a little better but I think the under coats have are ready done their damage and will probably keep this coat tacky for a few days too...I just hope there dry enough to wrap up tomorrow morning..

even though there still tacky, they sure look GOOD!
