Super Glue Question

While watching the American Woodshop site that Tango posted, I was watching how he made Band saw boxes, and I noticed he used Super Glue instead of a wood glue like Titebond (that I use). I was wondering if others use it as well on any boxes you build. He was saying it was thick like honey. Sure would speed up the wait time for glue up.

I have used super glue for years. The main problem is in setup time, it can set too fast to allow alignment and adjustment. Another drawback is the cost and shelf life of the super glue. For most larger projects I prefer wood glue. On small projects I use super glue almost exclusively.

If I am in a hurry on larger projects I use a combination. Mostly wood glue but a few places with the gell Super glue on one side and an accelerator on the other. The SG acts like a clamp.

If you are building something that you hope will be an heirloom or otherwise last a long time stick with Titebond. It is my understanding that CA has about a 10 year lifespan bond expectancy.

Note that I use a lot of CA for RC model building. I could not imagine one of my planes lasting ten years.

On the kauri I use I find that superglue stains the wood and makes the joint look bigger.

The superglue, or CA, isn't. I can pull apart a bowl rung with not alot of effort. Not all the time, but sometimes. Or if it is dropped it breaks at the glue up.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Rhys I wondered how the joints would look when using it. I have been really happy with the Titebond, but after seeing someone use it I wondered if others did as well. I use it for some smaller project. Think for now I will stay with the Titebond.

Glue ????? I have used a glue named liquid Fusion in the past. I bought it at Jonns Fabrics. They no longer have it in stock and I wondered if anybody has seen or heard of it. It is a clear urethane product. Perhaps one of our scroller friends knows of a substitute brand or product.

Gordie I believe that Gorilla Glue is a urethane glue (if I remember - hard to find in my part of Oz), Urebond by ? Smooth-on or Selleys Durabond.

Not sure about availability or other's success but google can be your friend for finding a local or online supplier.

Urethane glues have their uses but are not good for woodworking. The glue will expand and foam out of the joint. It works best for attaching different products such as wood to metal or plastic. Wood glues will out perform CA or other products. If you need super adhesion use an epoxy.
