I recently built a speaker out of MDF, I just painted the front using Black lacquer spray paint. I was surprised on how nice it came. From reading around most people recommend to next lightly wet sand with 1000 grit sandpaper and then use rubbing compound to bring the shine back. Then to follow with a polish. LIke I said earlier I am pretty happy about how it came out but I am wondering how much of a difference will sanding and buffing it make? I also read that if I spray a clear coat on that it will take some of the shine of away? Is this true? If anyone has any input from experience I would love to hear it. Thanks |

Hi, I would suggest that you duplicate the process you used on your project onto a another piece of the same material. That way you don't damage your project. Try what you want on this "sacrificial piece" before you attempt any additional finishing to your project.

pjoseph, I don't know what you would gain by doing this, if you are happy with the way it is why mess with perfection. I would follow the advice of the above poster if you are not happy with it as is.

Thanks for the suggestions, I am going to use a test piece first like metioned above. I am just curious to see how much better i can make it look. |

I would spray on the paint, let it dry, lightly sand with 400 grit, spray again, let dry, sand again, spray again, let dry, sand again, then spray with a clear coat, let that dry, sand with 400, then spray it again with the clear.Itll give you a nice smooth glossy look and will be well protected, and should last a long long time.
