Hello guys, new to forum and look forward to getting some info. Well i finished a car audio speaker enclosure and when i painted it, the edges on the outside (where I cut it AND on the routered edges) soaked up the paint alot and i had to apply 4-5 coats just to fix it so it looks even... What is out there so I can fix this problem so that it all goes on even the first or second coat without soaking up on the edges? I'v heard about 50% water and 50% glue and mixing it up and applying to the edges? would that work? what is an inexpensive fix for this? also, titebond II is used FYI Thanks everyone! BM3 |

The glue mixture should work, but be sure to let it dry well before painting it or you will get a crackle effect. You could also use a sanding sealer, or any clear finish that you have on hand. Welcome to the forum! T |

Ok great! So I would be able to use 50% titebond II and 50% water, mix it well, apply it, let dry completely then paint would go on well? Thanks! |

Probably will work fine for painting but not staining. Just to be sure I'd try it on the edge grain of a piece of scrap first...

I'd actually suggest a white glue instead of Tightbond II. Tightbond II has a bit of water resistance built into it, but white glue will dissolve in water. Bob

To be honest, 50/50 PVA and Water, wont do any better job than a good quality water based undercoat/sealer. We have a 3 in one Undercoat/ sealer/primer it aint cheap, but it does the job. I'm sure you could find a similar product locally. Being a Car audio system, I'd hazard a guess that you used MDF. The machined edges have to be sanded really well, down to about 240g.
