I mixed a quart of BLO and a quart of paint thinner and while dipping a piece, 16 x 20, I had problems with the 2 chemicals separating. What did I do wrong? Did I use to much paint thinner? Let me know.

Hmm, Id suspect it being something with your thinner( is your thinner mineral spirits?).Perhaps your using one of the newer environmental friendly versions, that dont really mix well with some products. Ive never had a problem with seperation before. I used to use BLO/MS at a 50/50 ratio and it worked well. I switched to danish oil instead of the BLO/MS because it seems to dry a little nicer I think, and looks very nice too.

| Same here. Some paint thinner says "100% pure mineral spirits" right on the container, but I don't know if that is an industry standard or not, so I don't take chances. If I'm mixing it with my oil finish, I make sure it's mineral spirits.

| Behave Yourself..I can't. |
I never mix up a quart at a time...I usually just have enough for the bottom about 1/2" deep of my dipping tray a 9 x 13 glass baking dish.

Scott, could be lacquer thinner rather than paint thinner. Bill I thought thinner and MS were one and the same, they just charge more for MS.

I do buy stuff called paint thinner, I just make sure it says on the container that it is 100% mineral spirits.

Scott, I had the same problem with the two chemicals separating. I normally use the non-odor version of mineral spirits that comes in a yellow label from WalMart. Looks just like mineral spirits w/o the smell. This works fine with the linseed oil. However, I got some in an opaque container from Lowes that also claimed to be a non-odor mineral spirits. I knew something was wrong when it came out white instead of clear. It worked OK on the initial project, but overnight the white stuff separated. I don't use that stuff anymore...back to the wal-mart version!
