Default Finishing Basswood/Poplar Rounds with Bark

Just cut a round thought it might be poplar, but now believe it to be basswood. What is the best way to finish the round with attached bark? Also what is the best finishes to use on this soft, on so soft wood?

Now that I have the cutting completed, I'm not sure what to do with it.

Thanks in advance to any and all who will provide their thoughts, their experiences and best guess. LOL

I made a basswood piece a couple of years ago and used tung oil 50/50 w Mineral spirits and dipped it...Let it dry for a couple of days and used a clear lacquer finish and it's holding up great, still hanging in my brother in laws den.

here is a pic.

I would soak the hell out of it in Danish oil, or a 50/50 blend of MS and BLO. You will be amazed at how much it will soak up. Then, wipe the surface off and let it air for a few days to a week.If after it dries it looks dull or 'thirsy' I would soak it again in the same stuff, and wipe and let it dry again. Then, spray it with multiple coats of deft , sanding lightly with 320 tween coats. Then, when its all dry, snap a picture and show it off!!!

The Dale and Mike show...you guys are to funny. I really appreciate your words of wisdom on finishing off this project.

I will take a picture when it is finished and post it on site, but it sounds as if the finishing will take several days due to the drying.

Again I want to express my thanks to you guys for all of your valuable advice on the proper way to apply a finish to these soft woods.
