Default Boiled Linseed Oil

I have been told that boiled Linseed oil mixed with mineral spirits is a great finish for certain types of projects. My simple question is can I store this once mixed or do I need to use everything that I mix at once?

Yes, it can be stored mixed. I woulnt ever dump it back in with the original batch though for risk of contaminates. Label a different jar or can to store the mixed in, and it should be fine.

Thank you. I did figure that it would need to be in a different container.

Richard Grover:

I never had much luck with boiled linseed oil, BUT a painter once suggestion that I turn my container upside down for a few minutes after use. This seems to aid in sealing the container to avoid oxidation and to preserve the finishing material. Seems to work.

Hi Richard

I've used BLO/MS a little bit. Personally, I mixing only what you will use at one time. I don't know if it's contamination or poorly sealed, but I've found that going back to the mix after a time, it starts to congeal.

Personally I would prefer to only mix what amount I think I will need or am willing to throw out later. BLO & Ms are both readily available and relatively cheap, so I don't worry too much about wasting a little once in a while. Also, the ratio isn't all that critical as far as the color and appearance is concerned, so if you mix a small batch, then need more to finish the project, you don't have to get the 2nd mix perfect to match the original one. I don't think there is any problem with keeping some for a few days, but for me, I don't see any big advantages to mixing up a lot at one time and storing it.

I don't mix alot at one time but the excess I do keep in a jar covered with saran and a screw on lid...It keeps for quite awhile this way.

When i mix mine it is enough to cover the bottom of a 9x13 glass dish I use for dipping my fretwork in or larger pieces setting in and pouring the mixture over. I let it dry for several minutes and use my air compressor to blow out excess and wipe dry with lint free (old T shirts) rag.

After 24 hours I use liquid gold (name brand available at wally world or most stores) in a spray can to give it a wonderful smooth finish, just spray directly on piece and wipe off with cloth...smooth as a babies bottom! I keep a dedicated cloth for this purpose stored in a plastic bag it builds up extra over time and I can just use the rag (old terry cloth towel remnant) as a buffing cloth already permeated with LG.

I have a container that is pretty air tight, and I always blow into the it before closing it. It always stays usable.

I have just read hours of review pro and cons of linseed oil. Whats true???

Is the stuff bad? Does it promote mildew?.

This is a situation where I think there is information overload in both directions for and against it.
