Default Not scroll sawing but wood finishing

I am building a deck out of pressure treated wood. As far as I am concerned it looks good just like it is. But my boss ( the better half) ask me if it can be stained. Any one ever do this?

Pete,

I have not stained a deck, but I have stained outdoor benches made with pressure treated wood. These benches are at a school and are left out all year and have not had any problem with them. In fact we have some that were painted and now as I replace wood it is all being stained - no more painting for ourdoor benches. Personally we are using "CWF-UV Cedar" available from Home Depot. But I would guess that any penetrating oil finish for exterior wood would work.
Of course you could just tell her that it won't work and then you won't have to do it. But I would not suggest that you lie to your wife, so I guess that option is no good.

Hi Pete. I've got to side with your wife (Sorry ).I'm sure it looks good now,but without some protection from the sun,it won't stay that way.An additional coat of clear sealer (Thompsons etc.) if nothing else, would be a wise investment in my opinion. You worked your butt off I'm sure to make a nice deck.Take a break from it,but definitely follow up with some type of UV protection.A couple years from now,you might have to re-coat,but the deck will still look like new compared to grey and splintery. Is the PT wood 5/4 decking? If so, I can send ya some pics of what it looks like without the sealer after about six years.

Richard will the CWF-UV Cedar actually stain the wood ( Pressure treated)? And is it a solid color or will the grain show?

PS MY wife has excellent "LIEDAR", I'd never get away with it.

Yes Jerry it is 5/4 PT deck.

Also How long should I Wait before I stain it. I heard 30 days. But in this Texas 100 degree heat and sunshine I figure 10 days. Heck it only took me 4 hrs to completely dry out.

I know I will get in trouble for this next part of the story.

While I was working on the deck Saturday, a Jehovah Witness, walked up to me and started preaching to me. I Let him for a while. But then I told him I really needed to get this done. Well he was a little bit taken aback about me not wanting to hear him preach, asked if I didn't love Jesus. I said"young man I am 63 years old and need to finish this deck before I go to see Him, and at this rate I will never get to see Jesus." With that he said "Bless You" and left.

Yes, we stained our deck many years ago. It was stained to match the chocolate colored bricks used in our foundation. Restained it about 10 years later. That's how well it held up. It was stain, not paint. Then, covered it with Thompson sealer. When we finished, it did look much better stained. Deck was a little over 4' off the ground, with lattice enclosing the underside. Took a while to get that lattice stained, but it was worth it. BTW, the lattice was stained only once, and it still looks good. Just the floor of the deck was re-stained.

Sorry, I can't remember now, the wait period. But, if memory serves, it was on the containers. So, be sure to check the directions, of the exterior stain brand that you choose.

Wish I could be more help.

I love it!

When I built my deck I soaked all the planks in Thompson. 13 years later still looks good. Not great but looks good.

Pete, I believe I had to wait 30 days for the PT to dry out before I stained it. I know that the wood should be at least dry to the touch (in an always shady area) before staining and again, dry to the touch before putting on any deck sealant. Your not in trouble with me since you are politer than I am when interrupted by prosyletizers.
