I finished spray painting the last of my tray puzzles. I assumed they were dry. No longer felt tacky when I touched it in a safe place. I got my spray clear coat and sprayed...Immediately got a run the size of the Mississippi. I had the tray sitting up leaning against the back of my spray paint box...err booth. No I didn't douse it I gave it a light coat... My question? Can I spray the original paint color over the clear coat...After it has dried? Then let it cure and clear coat it again? Never tried it before...never had a run like this before. I don't think I shook the can long enough and the thinner or whatever the paint is suspended in caused the paint to dissolve. If I try and sand it I'm gonna end up with gummed up sand paper and a mess on my hands... Sheesh when it rains it pours....Dang and I was almost done with this project.

That is a problem Mike. What would happen if you let it all dry real good and lightly sand the run? Would that ruin the puzzle? I'm sorry I'm not much help with painting mistakes. Hopefully someone else will offer better advice.

Mike, You silly silly boy. ![]() It happens to best of us mate. 1st, is the paint job under the clear still OK ??? If it is, then let the clear dry for a bit, you don't have leave it for days, just until the it's a bit harder than touch dry. Then get out your oil stone and sharpen up a chisel, and slice that run off. I have used a Stanley knife blade and a razor blade in the past, but find that a chisel is easier to handle and leaves you with full length fingers when finished. Then just cut back the whole thing with 240g or 320g paper paying particular attention to the where that pesky run used to be. When Happy - re-coat.

Thanks for the pats on the noggin. John, nope the paint underneath the clear coat ran as well. So here is what I did. First I covered my spray booth with a vinyl table cloth..shhhh the wife doesn't miss it yet. Then I turned the heater on in my shop, right after I used my shop vac to clean it out real well, even though it is over 20 feet away I wasn't taking any chances. Then I removed the table cloth, donned my mask and wiped it all down with some ms. I went to the mailbox to let the ms dissipate while I was there explained to my neighbor that No I wasn't afraid of the swine flu I was wearing a mask because I was doing some spraying in my shop....ya dah ya dah ya dah..and when I returned, I used John's tip and used a razor blade to remove the big hunk of run that was still there. I then sprayed it with the original paint color & left it to dry, and have now clear coated it for the 2nd time in an 80 degree shop...I really have got to remember to turn the heat down before I go to bed tonight.. It all looks okay, and I remembered to shake the heck out of this can of clear coat. I think I may still be able to deliver the puzzles tomorrow....Thanks John for the help!
