I like to use pine and I'm looking for something easy to make it shine. Any quick and cheap suggestions? Thanks James

Tried and tested wipe on oil based finish. This came to my attention a few weeks back and it works great especially as it kicks the grain out of the pine. Use 1/3 oil (boiled linseed oil or tung oil), 1/3 mineral spirits or naptha (this evaporatesfaster) and 1/3 urethane or alkyd based glossy varnish. You can use most any traditional varnish but I found urethane locally and it seems to work fine. Apply with a lint free cloth - cotton T-shirt fabric works well. For the first coat apply liberally and fairly quickly rubbing firmly into the wood and remove any pools or runs as you go. Allow to dry overnight and then give a very light sanding with 200's paper. Remove all fine dust with a cloth dampened with mineral spirits and apply a second wipe on coat, Repeat the process with further coats to build up the gloss, applying thin even coats. Sand before the final coat with 400's paper. Make as much varnish up as you think you will need and store in a darkened glass jar. This is an economical and easy way to get a really nice finish and well worth a try.
