Default ornaments sticking

I'm finishing a bunch of ornaments over the weekend with spray poly and my problem is they are sticking to the board underneath them when the poly dries. Do you guys put anything under your pieces when you spray them that so they don't stick? I was thinking maybe something like wax paper or something like that. Would this work or are there better ways?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, I strung some string above my finishing area and hang the ornaments up to dry using bent paper clips although ornament hangers would also work. I also hold the ornaments by the clip when spraying them. No sticking that way. Here is a picture of what I do. Hope it helps.

Make a bed of nails to put your items on.

I use deft lacquer Steve, don't have any problems it dries quick, maybe you could hang them if not wax paper should work!
I made a hanging thingy, a long strip of wood held up by chains and unfolded paper clips to hang em. It is out of the way and they dry safely. Don't use a clothes hanger

While I spray lacquer, I hang them with paperclips. For items I set down flat, I use a bed of finishing nails.

Thanks for the help everybody. I have some wire shelves in the garage and I might try the paperclip idea and hang them from there. Then I can even spray both sides at the same time and get done that much quicker

I've used most of the ideas suggested. One other thing I do, depending on the size and shape of the piece, is to lay across either a couple small diameter dowel rods or thin, narrow table saw scraps. Try to minimize the amount of surface area that is in contact with the piece. I saved some small triangular shaped lengths of scrap from some other project that work pretty well. I try to have several so that I can rotate them so that the finish doesn't build up and get too sticky after multiple coats.

I would not recommend the wax paper because I've had it stick to the cutting and then you have to clean off the paper scraps and the globs that have probably made it under the piece as well.

Lots of people on this board use the nails, hanging from clips and even make a spray bed out of hardware cloth.

Hi steve, I have a nylon string tied across my shop. it has little loops tied all along the way. that way. you can make a fish hook type of thing to hook your ornament or even bigger pieces with. you can use only one loop and wire, or as many and as far apart as you might need. that way you can spray all the way around. I also have a big box, that I spray things in, then with the project on a wire, I hang them on a tomato cadge. your friend Evie
