Default Help!!

I keep hearing about dipping works in oil. What kind of oil are we talking about? and where do I get it? I am thinking that oil dipping will be so much easaier to get into all the small cuts on some of my fret work . Any help will be greatly apreciated

Thanks,
D,J,

I use Watco Danish Oil while a lot of folks use Formby's Tung Oil or a 50-50 mix of Boiled Linseed Oil and Mineral Spirits. All should be available at any decent hardware store or the BORG.

Well lets talk about oils. There are many diffrent oils out there. Boiled Linseed Oil, Danish Oil, Tung Oil. These are some of the most popular ones. You should be able to locate any of these oils in Lowes, or Builders Square or perhaps your local hardware store if you do not have one of the others in the area. Oils are fairly easy to use but are not for all kinds of wood. If your wood is waxey or oily it will not penatrate well. There tends to be low oder with them. There are also some wipe on Polyeurathane that work a bit like oils. Most of the oils will change the color of the wood a bit so test a piece 1st. I am sure that there are more informed folkes out there that have used and are using oils more than I have, that is one of the great things about this board, ask a question and get a TON of info.

I also use Watco Danish oil on almost all items i make from baltic birch, it does indeed darken the wood. . . on the other hand i really like the fact it seems to bring out wood grain. .

Hi D.J.
I use both. Keep in mind that Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO) takes much longer to dry (days) and cure (weeks or months).

I always dip fretwork in Watco Danish Oil. I follow a rather lengthy process with fretwork but they come out nice.

I am a Danish Oil Dipper. Be sure to remove all of oil that runs out of the fret work.
