Default Bubbles!!

Hi all,
I did a little project out of 3/4 yellow pine. As I have in the past, I sealed it with one coat of spray shellac, followed by about five coats of a clear gloss spray. After it dried, I noticed little bubbles all over the surface. I sprayed it outdoors; temp about 65 degrees. This never happened to me before.

Any ideas? Thanks.

did you let each coat dry fully? The bubbles are most likely coming from within the wood as the voids filled with air are being filled with finish in its place.

Maybe it's the spirit of Don Ho.

If the pine was not completely dry(6-8% moisture content) before you put the finish on, water from inside the wood could try to evaporate out and cause the bubbles. When finishing outdoors, the top surface of the wood is considerably hotter than the bottom surface and inter and intra cellular moisture will try to escape through the hotter top surface causing bubbles in the finish. Been there, done that.

Thanks all, for your comments regarding the possible causes of the "bubbles" that appeared on a project after applying a spray finish.

The "finishing" part is fun...if it turns out as you expected!
