Default Finish over Danish Oil?

Hey everyone, Question for you...

I just tried Watco Danish Oil on my most recent intarsia piece. It looks quite nice but doesn't have that sheen I'm used to with Bartley's clear satin gel varnish. Would I have to worry about any type of reaction if I put a light (quick light rubbed) coat of the Bartley's over the Danish Oil? ...or would I be better to leave it alone?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Janette,
I'd try a sample, but I can't see an issue. Danish oil is a combination finish (oil and varnish), so it should be compatible.

Janette,
Alas, I can't answer for Bartley's but I use clear lacquer over Watco all the time without any issues. I suspect that the Bartley's would be fine as well, perhaps try it on a scrap piece. The biggy to remember is that the Danish oil needs to be fully dried (I usually wait a day or 2).

Will the two you are talking about have a bad reaction? That one I don't know, but you could sure test it out on some scrap (yes I know there is no such thing as scrap). I had a reaction that ruined a project between 2 different manufacturer's of spray poly, oh I was very unhappy with that.

I will try on a scrap - or a magnet maybe since I've used the danish oil on them. I knew you could put the spary stuff over, but wasn't sure about the varnish. Part of the piece was blue pine and it SUCKED up the oil forever so I let it dry for several days before putting on the backing. boy that pine sucks!!

Thanks guys!

I always spray either DEft or Watco brand clear wood finish over the danish oil. I dont think bartleys would create any problems

You could also try rubbing it out with paste wax and 0000 steel wool, buffing with a soft cloth. Thin the wax with a few drops of mineral spirits for better lubricity.

The Danish oil should be well cured for this.
