staining baltic birch Nate, as Pete B said, birch stains a bit blotchy. I think that the easiest cure is to give it a thinned coat of clear shellac, dewaxed if you can, (Zinsser seal coat works well) and then stain it. I would cut the shellac about 50% with denatured alcohol and use the mixture as a seal coat. This works very well for me when I want to stain any blotchy wood; maple, pine and birch come immediately to mind. A light hand sanding with 320 grit paper will smooth off the surface of the portrait without getting into the frets. This will also have the effect of preventing the edges from darkening too much when you stain the surface. Hope this helps.
