Question Finishing Baltic Birch?

Hello Everyone!

Just a quick question........

I have a few portraits I am going to be cutting out of 1/8" baltic birch. I would like to stain them a little darker. Do I have to first seal them with a sanding sealer for the stain to take?

Do any of you stain your wood before you cut it?

I have found that when staining BB the edges come out a bit darker than the rest of the piece. Not sure why or if a sealer would make any difference.

BB stains a bit blotchy so, yeah, a sealer is recommended. I finish BB with just sealer and wax. Wouldn't work on fretwork, though.

nate, I apply Formby's satin tung oil finish to all my portraits, it will darken the birch somewhat. Never tried to stain it. I use 1/8" luan stained a dark color for a backer and stain the frame the same as the backer.

Default staining baltic birch

Nate, as Pete B said, birch stains a bit blotchy. I think that the easiest cure is to give it a thinned coat of clear shellac, dewaxed if you can, (Zinsser seal coat works well) and then stain it. I would cut the shellac about 50% with denatured alcohol and use the mixture as a seal coat. This works very well for me when I want to stain any blotchy wood; maple, pine and birch come immediately to mind. A light hand sanding with 320 grit paper will smooth off the surface of the portrait without getting into the frets. This will also have the effect of preventing the edges from darkening too much when you stain the surface. Hope this helps.
