Smile Question about Danish Oil

While waiting for a book on finishing to arrive, may I ask for some info. from some of you experienced woodworkers?
When using a Danish Oil to finish, do extra applications, with drying in between each, give a richer polish? If so how about how many would you recommend and do I need to sand between each application?
What is "hand rubbed"?
Thanks again,
Dale

I use Watco for most of my finishing. On furniture type items I usually do three coats, sanding them in with 400 grit. Those kind of things are usually walnut and the sanding in of the oil creates a slurry which fills the grain and you get a very smooth finish. I do not wax but about once a year wipe on a fresh, light coat of oil.

I also use 3 to 4 coats and finish with 0000 steel wool.

Sounds about right, Earl

My husband Danish oiled our wooden draining board and I wanted it left natural. It took years of scrubbing for me to remove it, so it certainly does provide a hard resistant finish.

I only use the danish oil on my scrollwork.Generally I dip, or soak the piece in it once, wiping of the excess. Some woods (maple, cherry, walnut) look much better if I give them a second dipping after the first has cured, the endgrain is so thirsty. Dale

Thank you for the help.
Do you usually use a spray or other "clear coat" over the Danish Oil finish or just leave it at the oil finish?
Thanks, Dale

yes, after the oil is cured (24 to 36 hours) I spray with aerosol Deft , usualy 2 coats of gloss, then a quick 400 grit sanding, then one coat or 2 of semigloss Deft, sanding tween coats. Dale

Dale, is Deft the same as polyurethane? I’m not sure I’ve heard of that before. I ask because seems that a Polyurethane OVER an oil seems counterproductive.

Incidentally, I utilize about 2 or 3 coats of Watco (always Watco – it is the best) with 0000 steel wool...

After applying the Danish oil, I have used 600 grit black oxide wet/dry automotive sand paper. This leaves a very smooth satin finish.
Dave, I believe Deft is a brand name.

Deft is a brand name for a spray clear laquer. Very nice product, I use it a lot. They now have out a water based finish also that I haven't tried yet but have heard good reports from several people that have used it.
