Default Need advice for books on finishing

I am most recently making boxes out of various woods. I have used Canary, Walnut, Oak and Mahogany. To learn how to put a finish on them, I feel I need to read a good book or two. Since there are quite a few to choose from, I would appreciate any advice any of you could share. I have also recently cut J. Zaffino's "Tight Gate" and "First Fathers" and need to do a final finish on them (Red Oak ply).
Thanks, Dale

Teri Masaschi's book, Foolproof Finishing, is great. I learned a ton from it. It's funny and readable and chockful of all kinds of finishing.

I'd recommend that one too - lots of well presented information in it. The other one I've had recommended to me but I don't have is this one http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-.../dp/0762101911
It seems to get mainly positive reviews on Amazon too.

I made cigar humidors for years and the general rule was satan on the sides and gloss on the top. We sprayed them with a harbor freight cheapo spray gun and always had good luck. If you can't do the sprays separitely you can never go wrong with high gloss. (got it a home depot). At least that's how it worked with humidors with solid lids. Scott in AZ

Sounds like a devil of a way to finish something ... (Sorry Scott I just couldn't resist)

Interesting idea using two different finishes on one item - I hadn't thought of that ..

The book I have used and was going to mention has been mentioned by Ian (Puzzled Moose). Understanding Wood Finishing by Bob Flexner. Great, well written, and helpful book.

I have Bob Flexner's book also. It is very very informative and easy to understand.

Thank you all for your helpful and prompt responses. Sounds like one of my next visits will be to Amazon. Any additional hints or advice will be greatly appreciated.
