| Curly Maple I was looking for help on curly maple it keeps chipping out on me when i plane it ?

| Janette is certainly right, and on top of that the curls add to the difficulty. Once you figure out which direction tears out less, put some water in a spray bottle and spray the top of the board, then make very light gently passes. re-spray after every pass.

| One more tip I'll add is if at all possible to feed the board through the planer on an angle. This helps with most figured woods.

| I sand all the roushness off my maple. I used to use the thickness planer but inevitably got tearout.
I now have a thickness sander with a 120 grit paperand it does sand quite smooth

| You might have to resort to a scrapper. Even a hand plane, curly maple is difficult to avoid tear-out.
Any you will know in your arms and hands that you used a scrapper for a few hours. Don't plan much for the morning after using the scrapper.

I have a lot of curly maple put back I got over the years when i was in veneer mills and a lot of curly cherry as well . i will try some of all of your ideals and see what works best .
