Default Mahogany, Genuine

Anybody have a favorite finish and stain for mahogany? I want something that will give a deep finish to my project. I have pictures in "the Works in Progress" under Rose Cross.

Brian

I just use a natural Danish Oil, let it dry for 3 or 4 days (or a week) and then, if I want something a little more, spray on a few coats of Deft. I prefer to let the natural beauty of the wood show through.

Brian, I have two methods that work for me. If I have a lot of time I will dip my mahogany items in tung oil and let dry 24 hours. Then I spray on a lite coat of Deft or spray poly. If I am tight for time I brush on Minwax sanding sealer. Two hours later you can coat it with Deft or spray poly. With the sanding sealer I find 2 or 3 spraying is required.

This cross was done with tung oil.

What's your definition of deep anyhow? You mean a deep rich color or a thick glass like finish? Both previous suggestions sound great to me. You want the color to be deeper, the watco oils can be purchased with tints like mahogany, which will deepen the natural color.

Hi Brian
I use mahogany all the time and like Unixpro I use only Danish oil (Briwax). I dip it three time leaving 24hr to dry in between coats. This brings out the natural deep colour and grain of the wood and gives it a nice shine.
Graham.

Scott, that cross is gorgeous, I have just seen that piece framed recently, but I don't remember where.
Do you know if that pattern is available, or where I might be able to find it?
You did a super job on yours.

The cross pattern is still listed on the Wildwood Design web site (item # 61200). That same pattern is in the ScrollSaw Workshop Super Pattern Pack. Sorry but not sure the publish date. You can check with BobD or someone at Fox Chapel if you can still get a copy.
