Soapstone - Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Message Board

I just visited another scrolling forum and saw some photos of work done with soapstone. Has anyone ever tried this material and if so where did you get it? Looks like it might be interesting to try it out. I've seen carved soapstone but today is the first scrolled work in it I've seen.

Hi John...I saw it on a place at http://groups.msn.com/FreeScrollsawPatterns. It was under the "general" forum near the top of the list of recent posts. If you can't find it e-mail me and I'll try to go back and get you better directions. The stuff this guy was using looked to be about 1/4 inch thick And maybe 12x12 inches square. I've never seen soapstone in those dimensions before. There's a lot of new stuff I want to try as soon as I get caught up from current project committments. Just don't seem to have time to experiment any more.

Neal if it is the same thing I grew up with you can get it at a creek bed--boy am I showing how red my neck is now -- we use to use it it skip across the water and it was fun to make it "lather".. But that was on a creekbed over 50 years ago in the woods of arkansas .. here where I am it s just the same since its just a couple of miles to ark. from where I am ..-- so roll up yer pant leg -- no skinny dipping please -- and wade those country creeks..

Sharon....Where I live in West Virginia we pretty much just have sand stone and shale in our " crick " beds. I suppose there might be soap stone but I've never seen it that I'm aware of. After getting more info on cutting the stuff I'm no longer interested. Seems as if it eats blades like popcorn, super slow cutting and chips out really bad. Just not worth the hassle for me. I don't know if JT pursued it any further or not as I haven't heard any more about it.

I read the exact same things about the eating of blades and felt it is not worth the trouble. There are other medium out there that I would like to try in the future with corian as the number 1 . I just need to clean up some of these projects I have started and get ready for the fall craft season. Thanks for the info though.
