Default vaneer separating

I've just cut one of Jeff Z's patterns that is really heavy in very fine lines, veining. I have places where the cuts are so close that it took off the vaneer on the plywood. It's sloan?"s wood and I'm not quit sure what the center core is. Cut 1/4" with a 2/0 spiral blade. Any suggestions how to not have this happen. I used blue painters tape, under the pattern.

Maybe try putting tape on top to hold the veneer in place. I don't know but seems like it would help. Mike

Hey, Scott, I used clear packing tape on my last project & when I removed the tape, which wasn't easy, the laminate came off anyway. Wasn't very much, but the bottom was real bad. I think it mostly was poor ply quality in my case. Yours should have been a lot better though. I did mine in 1/2 inch ply, but, decided not to use 1/2 in. any more. The 1/8 & 1/4 is better for portraits, etc. anyway. Good Luck.
P.S. - The spiral blade will cause a lot of that. I use them all the time. The 2/0 is what I use too. '

I think it was the spiral blade. I think they cut both directions rather aggressively..Just a hunch though.

Get rid of the spiral blades. Use a Olson #2 Crown Tooth blade. It gives a very smooth cut that needs almost no sanding when done. And it doesn't tear off veneer.

Scott, I find that most of Jeff's patterns are like that. I use flat blades and Finnish Birch plywood that is glued together with exterior glue and have never had any separation. I agree with the others about the spiral blades. I would use flat blades in the "Hold your Breath" areas.

Scott

Sometimes I apply the finish before cutting and the poly seems to keep it from separating and the little fuzzy stuff is a lot less. You may want to give it a shot.
