Default Another wood identification help thread

The pictures below are from a dead tree that fell in the woods behind my house last winter. When I cut and split some logs for camping trip firewood, I was really intrigued by the color.

I looked all around the area for a matching bark tree so I could see the leaves, but couldn't find one.

The pictures don't do the color justice, but when cut or split, it's a bright canary yellow. After about a week, it turns rich cedar brown.

It's a pretty heavy hard wood - Not light at all. Seems heavier than oak.

Top picture is obviously bark from one of the pieces I split last month.

Middle picture is the same piece showing the rich dark color after a month

Bottom picture is one of 6 planks I cut with my chainsaw and ran through the planer showing the fresh cut yellow. I think it's brighter in person.

This is NY state BTW.

Thanks!

I'll second the Osage Orange. There was an article not too long ago in SSWC about it.
Edit:
I forgot...the article is online; http://www.scrollsawer.com/index.php?news=3034

Looks like we have a winner. Thanks everyone. I read the article and googled pictures of cut pieces and it sure looks like Osage orange. I'm surprised though. I didn't think that tree grew up here in upstate NY.

I've never used it, but reading about it, it looks like a nice wood to use. I'll have to see what else I can salvage from it.

Thanks again!
