Default Sea grape

Has anyone tried to use sea grape (Coccoloba uvifera)?
Tree trimmers left some near the beach and I have not seen anything about it. Thanks for any info.

I've never even heard of it. Where are you located? I'm envious, near the beach...<grin>

Mike,
It is all over central and southern Florida. It seems to be very hard and fresh cut wood turns very red after a few days. It looks a little like light Bloodwood.

I'd snatch some up and dry it out...You can never have too much wood and this variety sounds very interesting.

I'd be checking out the toxicity before cutting after it dries...

I found this.
Cocobolo: irritant/respiratory, eye & skin/great/dust, wood/common

I looked it up and this is what it said at Cook Islands Biodiversity : Coccoloba uvifera - Seagrape

"GENERAL NOTE: In Caribbean fruits used to make jellies, and an alcoholic beaverage. Roots, also astrigent, used to treat dysentry. Wood is hard and polishes well, and is used for cabinet work. Boiled wood provides a red dye."

This link is a .pdf woodturners newsletter and it gives pretty good info about seagrape wood.

Hope this helps. I would love to see some of this wood myself. Sounds to me like this tree is good for lots of things including food (grapes). I'd be interested in seeing projects made from it. Sounds like really beautiful wood.
