Default I hate red oak

I hate to admit it. One of my friends told me that it makes me un-American and that I ought to start calling myself comrade. But I really really dislike red oak.
I suspect that a part of the reason is all of the cheep junk in stores these days made out of the stuff, or worse made to look like it. But anymore - it just looks cheep and gaudy to me. White Oak, I love the stuff… especially now that I have gotten into “fuming” it. Cherry, Walnut, ash, and my new find, hackberry, as well as all the brightly colored or attractively figured exotics, I love them all. But I would now rather use pine or fir, than look a piece of red oak on my saw table.
So, do I need to move to Russia? Do any of you have a “least” favorite wood? Or how about a favorite.

Thanks for listening… I feel much better now.

Hi Ed. I'm laughing about your "un-American" thoughts

I guess everyone has a least favorite (pine) and favorite (___ oak in my case). But since I've only cut about three other types of wood, my opinion aint worth much on this subject!
Where are you getting the hackberry? It grows almost as good as the mimosa does around here.

Too funny..Comrade!

I prefer western red cedar over most other woods. the grain , coloring and texture are great and easily found around her. Of course the exotics are wonderful, but not readily available here.

I get it Mike!!! "Red" Russia...You guys crack me up!

No translator needed.

Least favorit so far is pine. Too soft and grain just not very interesting. Although, I tried mahagony stain w/conditioner and it has some potential.

Ed,
I guess we're both un-American then, hehehehe. I can't stand red oak although I do use tons of it as my customers prefer oak (why I'll never understand). I don't think I could pick just one favorite though. If I narrowed it down to just 4 it would be lyptus, maple, mahogany and walnut. Mahogany and walnut for their beauty and ease of working with and maple and lyptus for their strength and finish.

Ed, I guess to each his own. I never use fir or pine. My favorites are walnut and red oak. I guess I have seen too much of the pine at craft shows that they don't sand they just spray some kind of finish on and it is rough as a cob. I like a nice smooth, satiny finish on my projects.

What ever wood the customer would like thier project out of, or what ever wood I think will look nice. Also, red oak is rather readily available around these parts as well, but agree that ther are times when it gets to be just a bit too much!

I HATE red oak too. It's my least favorite wood. My favorite is canary wood.

Walnut and maple are my favorite American woods. I really like bubinga and zebra wood. I don't like soft pine even a little bit. I do use a lot of red oak, but that is because it is readily available.
