If you want to see hard, Try cutting some bodarc. I got a 2" thick log of it and cut it with a radial arm saw. The blade on the saw was carbite tipped and it ended up chipping 2 or 3 of the teeth off the blade. I use it to make pens and luckly it's a lot easier to turn than it is to cut. Makes a really nice pen. As for the oak, I think it's a ok wood. The way I make it not look cheap is I hand sand it with a high grit sandpaper and put glossy polyurethane on it. No stain. I just think that wood looks better natural than it does stained. And finaly my favorite woods are Aromatic (Eastern Red) Cedar, Black Walnut, Maple, and Cherry. My favorite exotic woods are Bloodwood, Black and White Ebony, and Bocote.

It's kind of interesting reading members likes and dislikes about the different kinds of wood. I personally can't say I hate any kind of wood that I have worked with but there a some I like better than others. Depending on the project I enjoy combining different kinds to add contrast. When it comes to red oak I much prefer the look of flat sawn to quarter sawn when stability is not an issue. I like wood with noticeable grain characteristics. I use wood that is difficult to cut or machine sparingly. Just my two cents worth.

No translator needed.

Least favorit so far is pine. Too soft and grain just not very interesting. Although, I tried mahagony stain w/conditioner and it has some potential.

I love using pine, I used a minwax Red Mahogany stain and it looks really coppery/bronze but indeed the grain is quite uninteresting

This is the peice i was speaking of
