Default Ya gotta love Scrounging

Well, after my rant about Lowes, figured I'd post a before/after pic of some free wood. My wife works at a jacuzzi dealer and the skids they use are all hardwoods. My latest hall included maple, white oak and red oak. It's all 5/8 - 3/4 thick and is great for ornaments and mini-clocks. The piece in the pic was about 6" wide and 36" long.

Sweet. Why do they use good hardwoods on skids?

Locally available. Cheap. Fit for purpose. A 6" by 36" board is scrap lumber for most uses....

As Terry said, locally available is a biggy. The other thing that ends up being used for skids is lumber that doesn't meet grading requirements. Skids coming in from Japan and the Phillipines are often mahogany and crates are usually okume or mahogany ply. There's gold in dem dere skids . I got some awesome wood once off a skid from Mexico, have no idea what it was but it was very dense and had terrific grain.

Be careful if you run them thru a planer or jointer. They can carry dirt and gravel that will really mess up a planer blade.
