Default Sticker shock at Lowes

Well, I needed a piece of maple so I went to Lowes figuring it couldn't be that bad. ARGH! I feel sorry for you folks who don't have any real lumber yards around to buy from. The maple was more than twice the price of what I normally pay for hard maple. In the end, I just walked out. The lumberyard is about a 50 mile drive so I'll likely head up there over the weekend. I figured out the gas and as long as I buy at least 5 bd. ft. I'm ahead. Heck, it's nearly $3 cheaper a bd. ft. to order it online with shipping from Niagara Lumber than to waste my money there.

I was looking at wood prices on the net yesterday Kevin.I'm not gonna tell ya what the red oak for your fretwork box pattern cost me from Lowes! Ouch!! Wish I had of had enough sense to walk out (lol). They should have a sign in the hardwood section that says "Buyer Beware"

My Lowe's doesn't even carry anything like this. Poplar, pine and oak. I get aspen at Menard's and anything else is a 45 minute (one way) trip to Woodcraft in Indianapolis.

Allegedly, there is a good lumberyard about 45 minutes NE of me, but haven't made that trip yet.

No maple at the Lowe's in PA. We have red oak, aspen, cedar and pine. All the wood seems like it's priced pretty high. So Kevin how much was the maple (bd ft) at Lowe's?

Rick,
It worked out to just about $8 a bd. ft. They price all their boards by the piece so I just did a quick calculation in my head standing there. I forget the exact number, but it was around $45 for a 1 X 8 X 8 piece. I did pick up a piece of cedar as I couldn't wait for the weekend, but even that ended up at $5.33/bd. ft.
Geees, I just used the calculator and that's actually $9 a bd. ft! At the lumber yard I deal with red maple is $3.95 a bd. ft. and hard maple is $5.60 a bd. ft.
Tom,
I rarely buy less than 5 bd. ft. Heck, that's just one 1 X 8 X 8 board.

I couldn't imagine having to depend on the Big Box stores for hardwood. No matter what kind of woodworking one does, having a good local source for lumber is invaluable. I guess I'm lucky, living in Western PA, hardwood lumber is pretty easy to come by. I take it for granted until I hear stories about folks who have to buy all their wood on line or at Lowe's, then I am thankful.
